Description
Bonsai (盆栽) is the traditional Japanese art of cultivating miniature trees in containers. It's not about genetically stunting trees, but rather about artistic horticulture, where the artist shapes and trains a normal tree or shrub to resemble a mature, full-sized tree in nature, but in a small-scale form.
The art involves various techniques like pruning, wiring, root reduction, and repotting, all aimed at maintaining the tree's health and creating an aesthetically pleasing, realistic miniature landscape. The goal is to capture the essence of nature and the passage of time within a single pot.
The class is led by Master Suisho Nakayama, born in Yamato Takata, Nara Prefecture, Japan. At just 16 years old, he chose Satsuki Bonsai as his lifelong specialty, dedicating his entire career to his beloved Satsuki Azaleas. His esteemed career includes roles as Executive Director of the Japan Satsuki Association and Director of the Western Japan Satsuki Research Institute. He also serves as a Master/Lecturer for the Japan Bonsai Association, and has traveled extensively to share his profound knowledge and teachings of Satsuki Bonsai worldwide.
