Aikido is a modern Japanese martial art developed in the 1920's through the 1930's by Morihei Ueshiba as a synthesis of his martial studies, philosophy and religious beliefs. "Aikido" means, the way of unifying with life energy or the way of harmonious spirit. Ueshiba's goal was to create an art that practitioners could use to defend themselves while also protecting their attacker from injury. Aikido techniques consist of entering and turning movements that that redirect the momentum of an opponent's attack, and throw or joint lock that terminates the technique. In Aikido, there are both physical and mental aspects of training. The physical training is diverse, covering both general physical fitness and conditioning, as well as specific techniques. Mental training focuses on relaxing the mind and body even under the stress of dangerous situations.
